Blue Rocks Campground ( www.bluerockscampground.com) is at the base of Blue Mountain, which is the southeast-most fold of the Appalachian Mountains in PA. The campground parking lot is at elev. 500'. From there, it's a steep 2 mi. hike past the blue rocks boulder field to the great views at Pulpit Rock (elev.1, 580'). The Valley Rim Trail (part of the Appalachian Trail) follows the ridge 2 mi to Pinnacle Point (elev.1, 635') for even better views and rock formations to play in. From there, it's 2 mi. downhill to the starting point at the camp store and video arcade. Total hiking time is about 3 hrs, plus 2 to 3 hrs sightseeing and playing along the way.
Itinerary:
OP 50 plans to depart from the Fountain of Life Center in Florence, NJ at 8:30 am on 11/5, arriving at Blue Rocks Campground around 10:00. Registration at the camp store costs $3.00 for adults and $1.50 for boys 12 and under (group letterhead gives 10% off). Start hike around 10:30, end around 4:30 pm, arrive back at FLC around 6:30 (might stop for food on the way).
Directions:
PA TPK west to NE Extension; NE Extension north to Allentown; Rte 78 west to exit 35 (Lenhartsville); follow Route 143 North 1 mile, turn left and follow signs.
Commander's Comments:
This is a fairly rigorous hike not recommended for boys under 11 yrs old unless they're pretty vigorous. Also, there are some cliffs and no guard rails so all need to be careful. The hike down is steep and slippery in places and people (boys) sometimes get careless and race ahead; it requires great patience on the part of the saints (boys) to resist this tendency and safely hike down. This hike coincides (somewhat) with an annual hawk migration so we may see hawks migrating.
